What are Impact Resistant shingles?

Impact Resistant shingles are a type of asphalt shingle that have been engineered to better absorb the impact from hail. They are sometimes referred to as Class 4 shingles, which is the highest rating possible for hail.  These shingles have an integrated polymeric backing material on the back that acts as a cushion to absorb the impact of large hail stones as much as possible.

The shingles that we specifically install are Owens Corning Duration Storm. While there are many types and brands of Impact Resistant shingles, we have re-roofed hundreds of homes and seen first hand that the Duration Storm shingles perform exceptionally well in Denver, so much so that these are what we installed on our own homes.

What is Synthetic Underlayment?

Underlayment, more commonly known historically as felt paper, is a water resistant layer that is applied on top of the sheathing (wood) and underneath the shingles.  The underlayment provides an additional layer of moisture blocking as shingles alone are not waterproof.   On the photo to the right you can see that Owens Corning loves to put their brand all over the underlayment for free advertising.

There are a few types of underlayment and the cheaper and more common types are called 15lb or 30lb felt, which have the look and feel of black construction paper.   We only install synthetic underlayment, specifically Owens Corning RhinoRoof U20, as it repels water better, and is resistant to tearing during installation.

What is Ice & Water Barrier?

Ice & Water barrier has a funny name but provides serious protection to your home. This peel and stick membrane replaces the synthetic underlayment on your home’s eaves, valleys, and around penetrations such as vents and chimneys as these are the areas most vulnerable to leaks and ice dams in the winter months.

Ice & Water barrier is required by building codes in areas usually west of I25, such as Boulder, but this expensive material is not required in some areas like Thornton or Brighton as the cities want to make the area more attractive to developers. Whether required by building codes or not, we still install Ice & Water barrier on every roof we do to make sure your home has the best protection possible.
